A balanced education for Grades 1–6

Our primary school curriculum is designed to engage students in a well-rounded education that emphasises academic achievement, creativity and personal growth. Teaching is delivered entirely in English, with Finnish language education provided alongside in line with national requirements.

Subjects taught

  • Language arts

    Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills developed across all year groups through English-medium instruction.

  • Mathematics

    Number sense, arithmetic, geometry and problem-solving building confidently from Grade 1 through Grade 6.

  • Science

    Hands-on exploration of the natural world, scientific inquiry, and foundational concepts in biology, physics and chemistry.

  • Social studies

    History, geography, civics and culture studied in an international context, encouraging global awareness.

  • Arts & crafts

    Creative expression through drawing, painting, craft and design, fostering imagination and fine-motor skills.

  • Physical education

    Team sports, gymnastics and movement activities that support healthy development and wellbeing.

Each year builds on the last. Here is a snapshot of the learning focus across Grades 1–6.

Grade 1
Literacy foundations, numeracy, and learning routines in a nurturing classroom environment.
Grade 2
Building confidence in reading and writing; introduction to structured mathematics.
Grade 3
Expanding vocabulary and comprehension; multiplication and division; first project work.
Grade 4
Deeper subject exploration; longer written work; collaborative group projects.
Grade 5
Critical thinking and research skills; increased independence as a learner.
Grade 6
Transition preparation; subject specialisation begins; student-led presentations.

Applying to the primary programme

Applications to Norden International School are open all year round, provided places are available and students meet the entry requirements. We welcome students of all backgrounds.

    Submit the online form. You will receive a confirmation and an assessment date.

    Level assessment

    All prospective students complete a placement assessment arranged upon request.

    Pay the registration fee

    A one-time registration fee of €750 is required to secure the place.

    Sign the school contract

    Finalise enrolment by signing the school agreement.

What age does Grade 1 start?
Grade 1 typically begins at age 7, in line with the Finnish national curriculum framework. Students who have completed pre-school or kindergarten are eligible to apply.
Is previous knowledge of English required?
No. Previous English proficiency is not required. All prospective students complete a level assessment arranged upon request so we can plan the right support.
What is the language of instruction?
English is the primary language of instruction throughout the school. Finnish language education is also provided as a secondary focus in keeping with Finnish curriculum requirements.
How do I apply for the primary programme?

What are the school fees?
The annual tuition fee is €9,850 + VAT, with an additional €500 for books and a one-time registration fee of €750. Contact us for details on the payment structure.
